The Trump administration on Monday filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court to enforce an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump on mail-in voting ahead of the November 3 congressional elections.

Background of the lawsuit

The U.S. Department of Justice sought to temporarily put the measures into effect after lower courts had blocked the order. The application aims to stay the decisions of the lower courts in roughly half the country. It is part of a series of voting-rights battles that are likely to reach the highest U.S. court ahead of the important midterm elections.
