Donald Trump has announced that he wants to bring the Strait of Hormuz under US control and, in return, demand protection money from Iran.
The threat to bring one of the world's most important sea lanes under American control marks a further escalation in the already tense relationship between the United States and Iran. Trump said that the US would take responsibility for securing the strait if Tehran were not willing to pay financially for the protection of the shipping route. In his own words, he announced his intention to "take over" the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the busiest waterways in the world. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea and is the central transport route for a large share of global oil trade. Roughly one-fifth of the world's traded crude oil passes through this strait. Any disruption or destabilization of shipping traffic would have immediate effects on energy prices and the global economy.
