US President Donald Trump has demanded a 20 percent fee on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz in the future, further intensifying the conflict with Iran.

In a telephone interview with the US network Fox News, Trump said the United States, as the "guardian of the Strait of Hormuz," must receive "financial compensation" for controlling the waterway. "We will keep the strait and probably control it," Trump said. The fee, he added, was a matter of fairness in "this extremely unstable part of the world."

At the same time, Trump declared on Monday that the US would block the strait to Iranian ships and "customers" of the regime in Tehran. On the platform Truth Social, he reiterated that the strait "is open and will remain open, with or without Iran." He also announced he would reimpose the naval blockade against Iran, which had been lifted under the mediation agreement concluded in mid-June with Pakistan and Qatar.
