Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General and a close ally of Donald Trump, defeated longtime incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff on Tuesday, according to multiple sources.

With roughly two-thirds of the vote, Paxton unseated Cornyn, who had served in the Senate for decades and was once seen as a potential party leader. The primary, which shattered spending records with over 120 million dollars poured mostly into television advertising, became a test of Trump’s influence over the Republican Party.

Trump endorsed Paxton at the last moment before the runoff, calling him a 'real MAGA warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas.' The former president had labeled Cornyn 'disloyal' because the senator had occasionally criticized him in the past.
