Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, backed by former President Donald Trump, defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday.
Paxton’s victory marks a significant win for Trump’s campaign to purge the party of lawmakers he deems disloyal. Trump had labeled Cornyn 'illoyal' and endorsed Paxton as a 'real MAGA warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas'.
Approximately two-thirds of Republican primary voters in Texas favored Paxton over Cornyn, according to early tallies. The race shattered spending records, with over 120 million dollars poured into the campaign, mostly on television advertising.
