Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday, defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn after a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
With roughly two-thirds of Republican primary voters backing Paxton, the result marks a decisive victory for the Trump-aligned wing of the party in Texas. The race shattered spending records, with over 120 million dollars poured into the campaign, primarily on television advertising.
Trump praised Paxton as a 'real MAGA warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas,' while labeling Cornyn as 'disloyal.' The former president has actively campaigned to unseat Republican incumbents he deems insufficiently loyal, also helping to oust Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana in their respective primaries.
A controversial figure
Paxton, 63, has served as Texas Attorney General since 2014 and previously held seats in both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate. He studied psychology and law, worked as a lawyer, and founded a church with his wife, with whom he has four children.
