US President Donald Trump cancelled heavy attacks on Iran that he had announced for the same evening, saying on Truth Social that peace talks had reached the highest level of Iranian leadership.
The reversal came only hours after Trump had publicly warned on his social media platform that the United States would hit Iran "sehr hart" ("very hard") that night, raising fears of a major escalation in a war that has been running for approximately "rund drei Monaten" (around three months). Trump's decision to stand down was framed in his post as a response to diplomatic progress, not a change in military posture.
The US naval blockade against Iranian ships and ports will remain fully in place until a final agreement is concluded, Trump wrote. The blockade had originally been imposed in response to Iran's de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which a large share of global oil and gas trade passes.
