US President Donald Trump has issued an order requiring older Navy aircraft carriers to be converted from steam-powered catapults to a more modern system, which will involve costs in the billions.
The US president's order aims to gradually replace the outdated technology on the Navy's ships. Rather than using steam catapults as before, the technology is to be retrofitted to operate electrically. This would eliminate all steam-carrying mechanical components.
According to a report based on information from Navy circles, the conversion represents a significant intervention in the carriers' existing infrastructure. On older ships, steam is used not only for catapult operation but also for heating aboard ship and for the generation of fresh water. These systems would also have to be adapted as part of a refit.
