US President Donald Trump on Wednesday flew for the first time aboard the Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, which is to be used temporarily as the new Air Force One and is estimated at around 400 million US dollars.
Background: Why a new Air Force One is needed
The aircraft is to temporarily replace the two aging presidential planes in the Air Force One fleet until a new aircraft becomes available. The existing presidential planes are, according to information from the White House, around 35 years old and have to be phased out gradually. Trump himself had repeatedly criticized the existing fleet as inadequate.
Before takeoff from Joint Base Andrews near Washington, Trump appeared pleased with the new aircraft. The USA should be "very proud," the aircraft was "beautiful," he said with a view to the plane. He had previously described the aircraft as a "flying White House" and as the "most luxurious aircraft in the world."
