President Donald Trump has directed the US Navy to return to steam-powered catapults for launching aircraft from carriers, a reversal of a years-long modernization effort that officials warn could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
The directive, issued despite opposition from many serving naval officers, instructs the service to move away from the electromagnetic launch system that was introduced on the USS Gerald R. Ford and revert to the steam-driven technology used on earlier Nimitz-class carriers. According to three outlets reporting on the order, the change of course reflects a long-standing complaint by Trump about the reliability and cost of the newer system.
