US President Donald Trump, just days before the NATO summit in Ankara, floated the idea of delivering F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye as a potential "host gift" for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Trump spoke on Wednesday in Washington when asked by journalists at the White House about a possible F-35 deal with the Turkish president. Asked about a "host gift" for Erdoğan, Trump said: "Ich werde wahrscheinlich etwas tun, das ihn sehr freuen wird." In another attributed version, he reportedly said he would likely make his counterpart "sehr glücklich."
The F-35 is considered one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. The aircraft was originally developed by the United States in cooperation with other NATO states — Türkiye was initially also among the partners in this program.
