Washington, July 20, 2026
US President Donald Trump has ruled out the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the United States, responding to remarks by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social on Monday: "Benjamin Netanjahu wird während seines Aufenthalts in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika in keiner Weise und unter keinen Umständen festgenommen werden". The statement was directed expressly against remarks by Mamdani, who had previously announced that he would have a possible arrest of Netanyahu reviewed legally.
Background: ICC arrest warrant since November 2024
The background to the dispute is an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Netanyahu, which has been in force since November 2024 on charges of war crimes in the Gaza Strip. Israel does not recognize the ICC and is demanding that the arrest warrants be lifted. The United States also does not recognize the court.
