Washington, 14 July 2026
US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Washington will levy a 20 per cent charge on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that pushed oil prices to a one-month high and renewed fighting over the critical waterway with Iran.
Oil prices jumped to US$84.78 a barrel on Tuesday morning as markets reacted to the combination of a renewed US-Iran flare-up over the Strait of Hormuz and Washington's decision to impose a new toll on shipping through the chokepoint. That level remains well below the nearly US$120 a barrel reached at the height of the conflict in April, but traders said the latest spike underscored how quickly any further escalation could re-ignite the price surge.
