In an interview with US network NBC News, US President Donald Trump said he did not want to exert any influence over the new head of the US Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh, while at the same time renewing his call for rate cuts.
Background: Leadership change at the Federal Reserve
Trump justified his demand for lower interest rates by pointing to what he assessed as a good situation in the US labor market. „We should actually be lowering interest rates right now,“ he said in the interview, which was distributed via the dpa news channel. Higher interest rates would curb the current „success,“ the president argued.
At the same time, Trump said he trusted the decisions of the new Fed Chair Warsh. When asked whether he wanted to influence monetary policy, he answered evasively in the negative. In public, Trump thus insists on the independence of the central bank, while at the same time repeating his long-standing line in favor of lower interest rates.
