Washington, July 4, 2026

US President Donald Trump delivered a speech on the evening of July 4, 2026 (local time) from a stage on the National Mall in Washington to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The address had to be postponed by roughly two hours due to a thunderstorm.

The appearance on the National Mall, the central event grounds of the U.S. capital, took place under significantly heightened security measures. Following several assassination attempts, Trump was this time protected by a bulletproof glass wall. Thousands of cheering supporters had gathered in the fenced-off area and chanted, as at his campaign rallies, "USA, USA."

Security and Framework

The celebrations for the 250th birthday of the United States were initially marked by an unusually severe heat wave. According to the organizers, temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius were recorded on the day of the event. Due to the extreme heat, a major parade had to be canceled. In the evening, a thunderstorm moved over the capital, forcing the evacuation of the event grounds and delaying Trump's appearance by nearly two hours.

Trump had previously written on his social network Truth Social that he would not be deterred by the storm. After the evacuation, however, he was only able to begin his speech with a considerable delay. Prior to that, a multi-hour flight show with fighter jets had roared over the stage, marking the kickoff of the festive evening.
