US President Donald Trump thanked FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Friday evening (local time) at a FIFA reception in New York for the "great, great, great decision" to lift the red-card suspension of US national team striker Folarin Balogun ahead of the round of 16 against Belgium.

The scene in Trump Tower, in which Infantino stood directly next to Trump, was highly symbolic. Trump personally addressed the FIFA President and praised his role in the Balogun affair, in which the striker was allowed to play in the round of 16 against Belgium despite a red card from the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The USA won the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina 2:0, but the subsequent suspension of Balogun was surprisingly lifted by FIFA before the Belgium match.

Trump said he had called Infantino and made a "recommendation" in the matter. At the reception, he stated according to attendee reports: "Sie haben das Spiel gewonnen und unser Team hatte alle Spieler." He was referring to Balogun's return to the squad, which had initially seemed unlikely following an official suspension.

Turning to Infantino, Trump added: "Ich weiß, dass du niemals dafür die Anerkennung bekommst." Those in the room interpreted this as an indication that Trump had personally coordinated the decision with the FIFA President over the heads of the responsible FIFA bodies. Trump also spoke of one of Infantino's "many good decisions."
