US President Donald Trump has threatened to add new tariffs on Canadian goods, citing smoke from nearly 200 active wildfires in the Canadian province of Ontario that has drifted south into the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Threat posted on Truth Social

The warning was posted on Trump's Truth Social platform on Friday, framing the issue as one of cross-border fairness. He claimed the United States is "unnötigerweise mit dreckiger, verschmutzter und ungesunder Luft belastet, deren Qualität gefährlich und völlig inakzeptabel ist!" and said costs imposed on the United States would have to be added to existing duties on Canadian imports, according to a dpa news dispatch cited by Deutschlandfunk.
