Trump threatens Iran with retaliation after death of three U.S. soldiers – 17th casualty in the war

According to the military, a third soldier was killed in a "controlled" detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way drone.

U.S. casualties rise to 17 soldiers

With these three deaths, the officially known number of U.S. military personnel fallen in the Iran war has risen to 17. The Pentagon had most recently reported multiple fatalities in the early phases of the conflict, but had subsequently stopped issuing new casualty reports.

In parallel, the U.S. military carried out attacks on targets in the Islamic Republic for the ninth consecutive night, according to its own statements. Explosions were reported from Tehran in multiple parts of the country.

Airstrikes and Iranian retaliation

According to the reports, Iran responded once again with retaliatory strikes, firing on targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, among others. This further expanded the conflict regionally.

Regardless of the war's course, another issue is causing diplomatic tensions: The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Dispute over ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu

Trump positioned himself clearly on Truth Social against any arrest of Netanyahu during a visit to the United States. "The head of government will under no circumstances be arrested there," the president wrote. Israel rejects the ICC's jurisdiction and denies the allegations.

Zohran Mamdani had previously said in a video podcast of the "New York Times" that the city's legal department was reviewing legal action against Netanyahu should he travel to New York in September for the UN General Assembly. Netanyahu traditionally travels to New York in September.

Mamdani described Netanyahu in the podcast as a war criminal who must answer to the ICC in The Hague. Trump did not comment on whether he would grant a potential extradition request.

Outlook: Possible escalation

Overall, Trump's choice of words illustrates a further escalation level in the already highly dangerous conflict with Iran. The combination of retaliatory threats, ongoing airstrikes, and the diplomatic dispute over the ICC arrest warrant is causing tensions between Washington, Tehran, and Jerusalem to continue rising.
