Washington, July 5, 2026

On Saturday evening (local time), US President Donald Trump delivered a speech on the National Mall in Washington before thousands of spectators on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, warning of an alleged communist threat in the country.

The United States of America is celebrating its 250th birthday this year. Two hundred and fifty years ago, on July 4, 1776, the founding fathers of the United States signed the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in Philadelphia, thereby establishing the nation. The anniversary celebrations were centered on the capital, Washington, where a multi-week program of concerts, religious events, and sporting events took place on the National Mall, the grassy area between the Capitol and the Washington Monument.

Despite temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius, tens of thousands of people had gathered on the festival grounds to watch a flight demonstration by fighter jets and subsequently the president's speech. The US capital Washington has been sweltering for days under scorching heat around 40 degrees. The record heat had already led to the cancellation of several parades and other events in the region, including the major Independence Day parade in Washington.

Heat Wave and Canceled Parades

Parades were also canceled in other cities along the East Coast, such as Philadelphia. Organizers urged visitors to seek shelter in nearby museums, ministries, and other public buildings after a storm warning was issued in the evening. The Trump administration's planned "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall was temporarily shut down after several people collapsed. In Washington, water was distributed to visitors because of the heat.
