Trust among Germans in the news remains stable according to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, although social media continues to gain importance as a news source, particularly among young adults.

As the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, published on Tuesday, shows, 46 percent of adult internet users in Germany say they generally trust most of the news. This puts the figure slightly above the levels of 2023 and 2024 and virtually unchanged compared to 2025. Germany is thus one of the few countries where trust in the news has not recently declined.

At the same time, the study shows that social media plays a growing role, especially among younger people. According to the report, 60 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds come into contact with news via social networks in a typical week. For 44 percent of this age group, social media is now the most important news source overall. The share of those who use content from influencers is also significantly higher in the youngest age group, at 30 percent, than among adults on average, where it stands at 13 percent.
