According to a study by the TÜV Association, the car remains the most important mode of transport for most people in Germany, while walking is the second most common form of getting around.

The TÜV Association's survey shows that the personal mobility of the population continues to be predominantly oriented around the car. Despite growing discussions about climate protection and the expansion of public transport, the passenger car tops the ranking of preferred modes of transport. Walking and other alternatives follow only at a considerable distance.

Walking takes second place in the ranking of modes of transport. The study interprets this as an indication that short distances in many people's everyday lives are still covered on foot. The TÜV Association also sees potential for a transport transition in this, as walking causes no emissions and requires little infrastructure.
