Nicosia, 10 July 2026
Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 10 July 2026 on the construction of a 97-kilometer underwater gas pipeline from the Turkish southern coast to Northern Cyprus, which according to the Turkish state broadcaster TRT is to be operational in 2028.
The agreement was signed during a visit by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz to the north of Cyprus. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar accompanied him on the visit. The planned pipeline is to transport Turkish natural gas over a distance of 97 kilometers under the Mediterranean to the northern part of the island.
Yılmaz described the undertaking as a "historic" initiative. According to the broadcaster TRT, the line could also be used in the reverse direction in the future if economically viable natural gas deposits are discovered in the eastern Mediterranean. Energy Minister Bayraktar stated on the platform X that Turkey views the energy supply security of Northern Cyprus as an "inseparable" part of its own.
