Two German nationals killed in Austria highway crash; guardrail pierced vehicle lengthwise

The victims were identified by a police spokesperson as residents of the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany. Austrian authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances of the crash or the identities of the two people who died. The cause of the vehicle leaving the road remained under investigation.

Route and location of the crash

The Westautobahn, designated the A1, is one of Austria's principal east-west motorway corridors, linking the city of Salzburg to Vienna and continuing eastward toward the Slovak border. The section near Oed-Oehling, in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria, is a heavily used stretch, particularly during the summer travel season when German holidaymakers and other international visitors transit between Bavaria and Austria.

Rescue services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The seriously injured back-seat passenger was stabilised on site before being airlifted to the Kepler University Hospital in Linz, a roughly forty-minute flight from the accident site. The condition of the 82-year-old after admission was not immediately disclosed.

Rescue operation and investigation

Police in Lower Austria said the inquiry would focus on why the car veered off the carriageway and on the dynamics of the impact with the guardrail. Investigators were expected to examine the vehicle, the barrier and the road surface as part of their work. No information on other vehicles being involved or on weather conditions at the time of the crash was provided in the initial police statement.

The accident occurred during a period of peak holiday travel on the A1, when many German drivers use the route to reach Austrian and further southeastern destinations. The Steinfurt district, located in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, lies close to the Dutch border and is several hundred kilometres from the crash site. The German consulate in Vienna was informed of the deaths, according to standard consular practice, though this was not confirmed in the initial police briefing.

Austrian authorities have appealed for any witnesses who may have seen the vehicle in the moments before the crash, or who travelled the Oed-Oehling stretch of the A1 early on Saturday morning, to come forward.
