Two people died in a head-on collision on a rain-soaked highway near Bruchsal on Sunday as severe thunderstorms and heavy rain swept across southwestern Germany.
The accident occurred on the B35 federal highway when a 65-year-old man lost control of his car, which police say hydroplaned and veered into oncoming traffic. His vehicle collided with a car carrying a 55-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, both of whom died at the scene.
The 65-year-old driver was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital by rescue helicopter. The highway was closed for several hours while emergency crews worked at the site.
Rescue Operations Across the Region
A police spokesperson attributed the crash to aquaplaning, stating it was "mutmaßlich infolge von Aquaplaning." The incident was the most severe outcome of a day of wild weather that triggered emergency responses across multiple German states.
