Two Light Rail Trains Collide in Hannover, Causing Injuries and Major Disruption

The Hannover fire department initially reported 12 injured people, while police later confirmed seven individuals sustained slight injuries. The injured ranged in age from 15 to 87, including two 17-year-olds. Some people were treated at the scene by emergency doctors, and others were transported to nearby hospitals.

The dispatch center triggered a mass casualty incident protocol due to the high number of people affected. Numerous ambulances were deployed to the site. Passengers in one of the trains were able to disembark unharmed at the Allerweg stop, while approximately 20 passengers remained in the other train awaiting assistance.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Üstra estimates the financial damage from the crash to be between €800,000 and one million euros. A company spokesperson described the cost as "Sehr hoch, sechsstellig."

Recovery of the damaged trains is expected to continue into the evening. One train may need to be lifted with a crane, while the other is to be placed back on the rails and towed away. Power in the area must be temporarily shut off during the complex recovery operation.

Recovery and Transport Disruption

"Die Leute haben noch richtig viel zu tun," the Üstra spokesperson said, referring to the recovery crews. He added that for now, regarding service in the area, "geht erst mal gar nichts."

Light rail service around the Allerweg stop is massively disrupted, affecting lines 3, 7, 13, and 17. A rail replacement bus service has been set up for parts of the affected route to help commuters navigate the closure.

The Hannover police traffic accident unit has opened an investigation into the exact cause of the collision. The primary focus remains on the suspected switch misalignment that directed one train into the path of the other.
