Two Üstra light rail trains collided near the Allerweg stop in Hannover around midday on Thursday, causing seven injuries and extensive damage.

The Collision and Immediate Aftermath

The collision involved a line 13 train heading to Hemmingen and a line 3 train traveling towards Altwarmbüchen. According to police, a misaligned switch likely caused the accident. "Das hat irgendwie nicht richtig geklappt," a Üstra spokesperson said, explaining that the two trains were supposed to pass each other but the maneuver failed.

Both trains derailed in the impact. One train was pushed against the elevated platform at the Allerweg station, causing part of the platform to break away. Concrete slabs were pushed up, and long scrape marks and shattered windows were visible on the damaged carriages. The overhead power line was also damaged.
