Two men have been placed in pre-trial detention after a forest fire west of Athens that burned more than 10,000 hectares of vegetation and damaged over 120 buildings in the seaside resort of Porto Germeno on the Gulf of Corinth.

Background of the Fire

The arrested men are accused of being responsible for triggering the fire. According to initial investigations, the forest fire was ignited last Friday by sparks from power lines near the seaside resort of Agios Vassilios, approximately 85 kilometers northwest of Athens. The Greek news agency ANA reported on the pre-trial detention.

The fire raged through the region of Boeotia and spread rapidly due to strong winds. More than 10,000 hectares of vegetation went up in flames, according to the findings of the investigation. Weather conditions significantly hampered firefighting and containment efforts.
