In Austria, the two millionth copy of the new passport, introduced about two and a half years ago, has been issued; Interior Minister Gerhard Karner praised the document at a press conference as one of the most secure travel documents worldwide.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the anniversary copy was issued to a young man from Wels. The occasion was a press conference on Tuesday, where Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Helmut Lackner, Director General of the Austrian State Printing House (OeSD), took stock.

Karner explained that the main goal of the redesign was to increase the security of the document – and this goal had been achieved. "We also know from international analyses that this passport is among the most secure travel documents in the world," said the Interior Minister. He also referred to five attempts to "crack" the new passport. "There were five attempts to 'crack' the passport. They all failed miserably," Karner said. He did not provide details about the failed forgery attempts.
