Two suspects arrested after copper cable thefts in Innsbruck

In the course of extensive investigations, the Innsbruck City Police Command was able to track down and arrest the two Austrian citizens as suspects. Following the arrests, the accused were taken to the Innsbruck correctional facility, according to police information.

The officers' inquiries had previously extended over several weeks. Among other things, traces at the crime scenes, possible transport routes, and fencing structures were examined in order to identify the perpetrators. The police initially provided no specific details on the circumstances of the arrests.

Investigations and arrest

The investigations against the two accused are ongoing. Among other things, authorities are examining whether the men may be responsible for other similar offenses in the greater Innsbruck area. The whereabouts of the stolen goods and possible buyers are also the subject of the ongoing inquiry.

The case sheds light on a phenomenon well known nationwide: thefts of non-ferrous metals such as copper regularly cause significant damage because the material is traded on the stock exchange and can be resold relatively easily. Construction sites with exposed cables are considered preferred targets.

For the city of Innsbruck, the alleged blow against the suspected perpetrators means at least a temporary easing of the situation. Police are crediting the success to targeted surveillance and criminal investigative work in the city area.

Legally, the charges constitute aggravated theft within the meaning of the Austrian Criminal Code. The police intend to provide information at a later date regarding possible further suspects and the exact amount of the damage.

The Innsbruck City Police emphasized that tips from the public had in several cases been crucial to identifying the suspects. In the future, the presence at known construction site locations is to be further increased in order to put a stop to similar series of crimes at an early stage.

Both accused are Austrian citizens residing in the greater Innsbruck area. Investigators declined to comment on possible prior convictions or earlier offenses; this question will need to be clarified as part of the ongoing proceedings.

The Innsbruck correctional facility confirmed that the arrests had been carried out; a decision on any indictment will be made by the competent Innsbruck Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigations have not yet been completed, according to police sources.
