Hall in Tyrol, 25 August 2026

Kathrin Sevecke, chief physician and head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at the Hall state hospital in Tyrol, has spoken out in an APA interview against plans to imprison children and young people earlier than has been the case to date.

Professional Criticism of Early Detention

Sevecke said that, in her clinical experience, there is no basis for locking up young people who are below the age of criminal responsibility at an early stage. "Es gibt keine wissenschaftliche Evidenz dafür, dass es Sinn macht, die Kids früher im Gefängnis einzusperren. Im Gegenteil, das hat ganz klar negative Effekte," she said, according to the APA interview.
