Federal Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced in Vienna on Wednesday that the accommodation and care of children with an Islamist-extremist background will be significantly tightened, and that models of intensified care — in individual cases "prison-like" — will be pushed forward.

Speaking in Vienna on Wednesday, Karner spoke of a new quality of threat situation that requires decisive action. The plans envision placing affected children and adolescents in specialized facilities that are to be significantly more secure in terms of space, personnel, and concept than has previously been the case. In particularly exceptional individual cases, the minister did not rule out accommodation with heightened security precautions, which critics describe as "prison-like."
