U.S. investigators link Mexican farm and U.S. distributor to salmonella outbreak tied to Mexican-style restaurants

In its statement, the FDA said: "La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés) indicó que, de las 191 personas entrevistadas en la investigación del brote, 177, equivalentes al 93%, reportaron haber comido en un restaurante de estilo mexicano, incluidos Chipotle Mexican Grill y Qdoba, del 14 de junio al 14 de julio."

The named farm is in Mexico, and the distributor is Coast Citrus Distributors in the United States. Officials said traceback work pointed to jalapeño peppers as a leading suspect item moving through that supply chain, though other produce items remain under review.

How investigators traced the source

The CDC and state partners have been working parallel investigations across several outbreaks of salmonella. The agency has described the broader picture in a single line: "Multiple outbreaks of salmonella are under investigation."

Investigators typically combine three lines of evidence to pin down a foodborne source: case interviews that identify foods patients remember eating, genetic fingerprints from patient samples and from leftover or produce tests, and traceback records that follow a suspect ingredient from the restaurant to the distributor and to the farm of origin. Officials said each line of evidence pointed to the same farm and distributor.

Why the names matter now

Routine public-health practice in such outbreaks includes issuing advice to consumers, asking restaurants to stop using suspect ingredients, and warning the implicated grower and distributor. Officials did not announce a recall in the materials reviewed, but said the traceback had identified the likely origin.

Both the CDC and FDA routinely note that salmonella infections usually resolve within a week but can be severe in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms commonly include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.

The naming of a specific farm and distributor is a step that investigators take only after the epidemiological and supply-chain evidence converges. It allows regulators to focus sampling at the source, to issue targeted warnings, and, where warranted, to coordinate with Mexican agricultural authorities on follow-up inspections.
