The European football association (UEFA) will not, for the time being, enforce as a binding requirement its originally announced line of showing a red card in future when a hand is held in front of the mouth.
Background to the controversy
The debate was sparked by a scene in the Champions League and subsequently spilled over into the ongoing World Cup finals. UEFA is now rowing back and leaving the decision more to the discretion of the match officials.
As the BBC reported, citing UEFA, referees are to assess situations involving a hand held in front of the mouth on a case-by-case basis in future. A yellow card would accordingly be appropriate when it involves "an attempt to conceal communication as an act of unsporting behaviour."
