The Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio issued three red cards in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa (2:0), sparking a debate about video review and its impact on the game.

With the score at 0:0 in the 50th minute, South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole was shown a red card; in the 84th minute, his teammate Themba Zwane was sent off following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR); and in stoppage time, Mexico's César Montes also received his marching orders. According to broadcasters, three ejections in a World Cup opener have never happened before; the last comparable cluster occurred 20 years ago at the 2006 World Cup in Germany in the round of 16 match between Portugal and the Netherlands, when four players were sent off.
