UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing the gravest threat to his premiership after more than 100 Labour MPs publicly demanded he resign or set a clear timetable for his departure, The Observer reported on Saturday evening.

The scale of the internal revolt — roughly a quarter of the Labour caucus in the House of Commons — marks an unprecedented moment for a sitting British prime minister. The Observer reported on Saturday evening that Starmer had reached the conclusion he could not hold on to office following conversations with ministers, advisers and trade union leaders.

Starmer's position has eroded dramatically since his general election victory in the summer of 2024. Two years into his mandate, his government has been battered by historically poor polling, with Reform UK under Nigel Farage eating into Labour's vote share on the right. The party now faces a by-election in Makerfield that is being framed as a test of both Labour's authority and the momentum of the populist right.
