London, 30 June 2026
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced in the county of Berkshire an increase in British defence spending of £15 billion over the next four years, describing the plan as the largest increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War.
With the defence offensive presented on Monday, the government in London intends to significantly raise military spending. In total, around £298 billion is to flow into the modernisation of the armed forces over the coming four years, equivalent to approximately €340 to €347 billion. This would raise annual defence spending from the current £54 billion to £80 billion in 2029.
Starmer spoke of the largest increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War. It would give the army the resources it needs to defend the nation. The additional funds are to be used to convert the Royal Navy into a hybrid fleet with unmanned vessels and to fundamentally restructure the entire military operational approach.
