Ukraine expands drone attacks on Russia – Moscow also targeted

The attacks apparently struck a broad geographic spectrum. According to reports, in addition to Moscow, the areas of Tambov, Yaroslavl, Lipetsk and Kotovsk were also the focus of the Ukrainian drones. The cities mentioned are in some cases hundreds of kilometres from the border with Ukraine, suggesting an attempt to increase the range of the attacks and tie down Russian air defence on several fronts simultaneously.

Reactions in the affected regions

Among the affected regions was also Tambov Oblast, over whose airspace several drones entered according to Russian reports. In the Lipetsk region, sightings of unmanned aerial vehicles also occurred. Incidents were also reported from Yaroslavl and Kotovsk. Igor Artamonov, the governor responsible for Belgorod Oblast, repeatedly commented on incidents in the border region according to the reporting.

Russian authorities responded by activating air defence and urged the population in the affected areas via warning apps to seek shelter indoors. Conflicting information initially emerged regarding concrete damage or casualties at the various target locations. The reports are based predominantly on Russian official sources as well as on the analysis of video footage on social networks.

Background: "Flamingo" weapons system

Observers interpret the new series of attacks as a sign of escalation in the air-based component of the conflict. The "Flamingo" cruise missiles used are considered newer weapons systems with greater range, which would explain why targets deep in the Russian hinterland could be hit. Russian military analysts spoke of a coordinated operation aimed at putting logistical hubs and administrative centres under pressure.

The Ukrainian side initially did not officially comment on the attacks. In Kyiv, it had been repeatedly stated in recent weeks that domestic arms production was capable of carrying out attacks in large numbers and over long distances. Regardless, the exact breakdown of the drone types used remains unclear, as only part of the incidents has been publicly documented.

International assessment

International reactions to the new series of attacks remained initially restrained at the time of reporting. Western capitals, which have so far supported Kyiv with arms deliveries, did not comment directly on the individual incidents. Observers assume that the attacks will be the subject of diplomatic consultations in the coming days, particularly with regard to the ongoing discussions on further sanctions packages and military aid.

The incidents in the night of 26 August fit into a series of reciprocal drone attacks that has been ongoing for months. For its part, Russia had intensified attacks on civilian and energy-related infrastructure in Ukraine in recent weeks, which the Ukrainian leadership had repeatedly described as retaliation for its own territorial threat.
