Ukraine Launches Massive Rocket Attack on Russia's Belgorod Region, Cuts Power and Water

Damage to the power grid left several districts without electricity, while water pumping stations were also affected, compounding the crisis for residents. Emergency crews were deployed to restore services.

Infrastructure Damage

"Bei einem massiven Raketenangriff auf die an die Ukraine grenzende russische Region Belgorod ist die Energieinfrastruktur beschädigt," the regional authorities said, adding that the city of Belgorod was also impacted.

Belgorod, a city of around 340,000 people, lies just 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. It has repeatedly been struck by cross-border shelling and drone attacks throughout the war, but Monday's rocket barrage represented an escalation.

In a separate incident, drones attacked the Yaroslavl region, located northeast of Moscow, later on Monday. Governor Mikhail Yevrayev reported the strikes but did not specify whether any damage or casualties occurred.

Unverified Reports and Silent Response

"The claims could not be independently verified," underscores the limited access to the conflict zone and the difficulty in corroborating reports from either side.

The Russian defense ministry had not issued a statement on the Belgorod attack by late Monday. Ukraine's military has not officially commented on the operations.

Energy infrastructure in Russian border regions has become a frequent target, with both sides accusing each other of strikes that endanger civilian populations. The international community continues to call for restraint and the protection of critical non-military facilities.
