One month after the start of substantive EU accession negotiations, Ukraine opened a further negotiation block on foreign policy, security, and defense at an accession conference in Brussels.

Ukraine is pressing ahead with its convergence toward the European Union. As the EU Commission announced, a new negotiation block — a so-called cluster — covering foreign policy, security, and defense was opened at a conference in Brussels. This moves the talks, which were only switched to the substantive phase about a month ago, onto another important pillar.

A "Super Tuesday" with four accession conferences

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos spoke to journalists in Brussels of a "Super Tuesday." During the course of the day, progress was also expected in the parallel accession negotiations with Moldova, Montenegro, and Albania. Kos pointed out that the last time four EU accession conferences were held on a single day was in 2002, before the major EU enlargement of 2004.
