Kyiv, 05 July 2026

The Ukrainian army has rejected Russia's claim to have fully captured Kostiantynivka, a city contested since late 2025 in the Donbas, while President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin of a deliberately timed disinformation campaign.

The Kremlin had announced on Friday that the strategically important eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka – one of four "fortress cities" in the Donbas – was under Russian control. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said verbatim: "Die Stadt steht nun vollständig unter unserer Kontrolle". Earlier, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov had informed President Vladimir Putin of the alleged capture during a visit to a command center.

Russian account and Ukrainian response

The Ukrainian side immediately contradicted this account. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that units of the 19th Army Corps continued to defend Kostiantynivka along assigned lines within the city and its approaches. The General Staff's morning situation assessment noted that fighting in the small city was ongoing. A spokesperson rejected the Russian account: "Wir weisen dies zurück. Das sind weitere Falschmeldungen".

Military spokesperson Andrii Kovalov also described the Russian claim as "falsch". He added: "Die Lage ist schwierig, aber sie ist unter der Kontrolle der ukrainischen Verteidigungstruppen". Austrian Armed Forces Brigadier General Matthias Wasinger confirmed to the ORF broadcaster Ö1 that Ukraine continues to hold positions in Kostiantynivka.
