Ukraine's Drone Technology Shifts Battlefield Dynamics Against Russia, Experts Say

Behind the scenes, questions loom over Russian President Vladimir Putin's plans for ending the war. Mangott revealed that there are growing doubts about whether Putin has a viable exit strategy. "Hinter den Kulissen bekomme man dort zu hören, dass man nicht genau wisse, 'ob Putin überhaupt noch einen Plan hat, wie er aus diesem Krieg rauskommen will – und zwar siegreich.'"

Despite recent Kremlin rhetoric emphasizing "Dialog" and "Diplomatie," Mangott dismissed the notion of new Russian weaponry changing the course of the conflict. "Dass Russland neue zusätzliche Waffensysteme besitze, die sie bisher noch nicht eingesetzt haben, ist nichts zu erwarten." He suggested that Putin's messaging to the Russian public is aimed at fostering hope: "Er will ihr Hoffnung machen, dass der Krieg bald vorbei ist."

Escalating Costs and Military Stalemate

The war has exacted a heavy toll on both sides, but Russia's losses in material and lives have surged. Gustav Gressel, another political scientist, noted that while Ukraine is faring better than a year ago, "Für Russland hat alles derzeit einen weit höheren Preis an Material und Menschenleben." The critical question, he said, is "welchen Preis Putin bereit ist zu zahlen."

Recent exchanges of attacks highlight the escalating brutality. Russia fired nearly 1,500 missiles, drones, and ballistic weapons across Ukraine in a single 24-hour period, prompting Kyiv to retaliate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the response as an "absolut fairen Antwort" to Russian aggression. Gressel characterized Moscow's tactics as "Kriegsführung mit gesprochenem Wort," emphasizing that Russia has not budged from its war goals: "Putin hat die Kriegsziele bekräftigt."

Meanwhile, Ukraine has demonstrated its ability to strike deep into Russian territory, targeting production lines rather than civilian areas. "Man muss die ganze Produktionsstraße bekämpfen," Gressel said, noting that the psychological impact on Russians is secondary. The effectiveness of Western-supplied weapons like HIMARS has been mixed, with Gressel pointing out their vulnerabilities: "Die US-Amerikaner haben da ein Monopol auf die Produktion (der Munition, Anm.) und nützen das politisch aus."

As the conflict drags on, analysts see little hope for a near-term resolution. "An ein Ende des Krieges glaubt er folglich nicht," Mangott concluded, despite diplomatic overtures from Moscow.
