Ukraine says it intercepted roughly 60% of Russian drones and missiles fired in July

Officials in Kyiv have used the figure to press Western partners for additional air-defense systems, including more Patriot batteries and short-range interceptors. President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has argued that the current pace of supplies is insufficient to match the volume of Russian fire.

The July tally reflects the intensification of Russia's long-range drone and missile campaign, which has combined Iranian-designed Shahed-type drones with cruise and ballistic missiles launched from multiple platforms, including strategic bombers over the Caspian Sea and vessels in the Black Sea.

Limits of interception

Air-raid alerts have become a near-daily occurrence in many Ukrainian regions, with mobile warning apps and sirens activating several times per day in cities such as Kharkiv, Dnipro and Odesa. Civilian casualties continue to be reported, and strikes on power substations have periodically disrupted electricity and water supplies.

Western military analysts caution that interception rates can fluctuate based on the type of incoming weapon. Drones, which fly slower and at lower altitudes, are easier to shoot down than ballistic missiles, whose terminal-phase speed complicates interception even for advanced systems like the Patriot.

The Kyiv government has also expanded its domestic production of interceptor drones and electronic-warfare systems, but officials acknowledge that domestically built systems are not yet able to replace Western-supplied air defenses at the scale required.

Aid and production gaps

Ukraine's allies have supplied an array of systems, including the U.S.-made Patriot, the German Iris-T and the French SAMP/T, alongside older Soviet-era platforms refurbished with Western components. Training crews and securing enough missiles for each battery remain persistent bottlenecks.

Friday's release comes as negotiations on additional military aid packages continue in European capitals and Washington. Ukraine has urged that the discussion move from incremental commitments to longer-term commitments that would allow Kyiv to plan its defense over multiple years rather than in 60-day increments.

Moscow has not publicly commented on the July figures, but Russian officials have repeatedly described strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure as a response to Kyiv's attacks on Russian territory and to Western arms deliveries.

The Ministry of Defense statement also included a separate set of figures for Russian combat losses, which Kyiv routinely compiles and which cannot be independently verified. Western governments and independent observers treat the figures as estimates rather than confirmed counts.

The data underscores how the air war has become a defining feature of the conflict, with both sides expending large quantities of relatively inexpensive drones in an effort to overwhelm the other's defenses or to force the diversion of costly interceptor missiles.
