Russian strikes across Kyiv region kill 15, Ukrainian emergency services say

In Bucha, local authorities said residential buildings were struck and residents were pulled from rubble by emergency teams. Photos shared by the State Emergency Service showed firefighters working at a warehouse engulfed in flames and detonations continuing in the background as crews attempted to reach survivors.

The Kyiv regional military administration said air defense units had been engaged throughout the night and urged residents to remain in shelters until the all-clear was sounded. Hospital admissions were reported in at least three districts, with the injured transported to medical facilities in Kyiv and surrounding towns.

Air defense and military response

Ukraine's air force reported that waves of Iranian-designed Shahed-type drones and cruise missiles had been launched at the region, though it did not immediately confirm how many were intercepted. The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented publicly on the strikes as of the time of writing.

International reaction was swift, with the European Union's foreign policy chief condemning what she called "indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure" and calling for additional air defense assistance to Ukraine. The United Nations coordinator in Ukraine expressed concern over the reported hits on logistics sites used to store food and humanitarian supplies.

Local volunteers coordinated with the State Emergency Service to set up collection points for blood donations and to deliver warm clothing, food and water to displaced residents. Municipal authorities in Bucha and other affected towns opened additional shelters as residents whose homes were damaged arrived looking for temporary housing.

The attacks came as Russia and Ukraine continue to engage in stalled peace negotiations mediated by third-party governments. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned in his evening address that Russia was preparing "new massive strikes" and urged allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems.

Risk to humanitarian supply chains

Analysts noted that the targeting of warehouses and logistics centers could complicate humanitarian supply chains in the region, particularly as Ukraine prepares for winter. Kyiv region authorities said they were assessing the damage and would provide updates on the number of fully destroyed facilities once search and rescue operations concluded.

The State Emergency Service said rescue teams would continue working through the night and into Thursday morning. A hotline was established for relatives seeking information about missing persons, and authorities asked residents to report any unexploded ordnance or suspicious objects to police.
