Ukrainian Drone Strikes on Russian Energy Infrastructure – Oil Pumping Station Near Vtorovo Hit

Shortly before, the Ukrainian intelligence service had reported an attack with drones on an oil pumping station important for Moscow's fuel supply. A technical building of the station in Vtorovo near the regional capital Vladimir east of Moscow was said to have been hit, according to Kyiv. Russian authorities have so far not confirmed the attack.

During the course of the day, Russian air defense shot down at least 23 Ukrainian drones approaching Moscow. This was announced by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin according to the state agency Tass. Sobyanin was quoted with the words: "Experts are currently examining the debris". The ministry did not provide any confirmation of damage caused by the drone strikes.

Russian Response and Shoot-Down Numbers

Overall, 124 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russia during the course of the day in various parts of the country, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow announced. The ministry provided no information on possible damage from the drone strikes. The Kremlin has so far not publicly commented on the incidents.

As a result of the attacks, many Russian regions are complaining about fuel shortages. Shortages occurred at gas stations in several areas because logistical chains were disrupted. Industry observers are watching the development with concern, since Russia must continue to reliably serve both the domestic market and exports.

In recent months, Kyiv has increasingly attacked strategically important targets in the Russian rear with drones or missiles. These also include oil industry facilities. Ukraine has been defending itself for over four years against the Russian war of aggression ordered by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. The attacks on Russian energy infrastructure are internationally regarded as part of the Ukrainian strategy to deprive Moscow of the financial means for the war. Russia, in turn, speaks of terror and demands retaliation.

Background of the Conflict

International observers assess the increase in drone strikes as a sign of an expansion of the combat zone. Both sides have intensified their attacks on energy facilities, logistics, and military bases in the opponent's rear in recent weeks. Concern about further escalation is growing.

Ukraine has so far not officially commented on every individual drone operation. In Kyiv it is pointed out that attacks on military and supply infrastructure are permissible under international law, since they are directed against targets that support the Russian war apparatus. The SBU stated that the attack was part of an ongoing operation to weaken the fuel supply of the Russian capital region. In a comparable attack a few weeks ago, a pumping facility was also damaged according to Ukrainian statements. Moscow had described the incident at the time as a "Provokation".

Market observers expect rising fuel prices in the affected regions in the short term. The Russian domestic market is heavily dependent on pipelines and pumping stations, the failure of which can cause local bottlenecks. Supplies to industry and the military could also be affected.

If the situation escalates further, Ukraine could expand its drone campaign. Observers in Kyiv see the attacks as an effective means of pressure to bring Moscow to the negotiating table. However, no diplomatic solution is in sight so far.
