On the night leading into the final day of voting in Russia's regional elections, Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow and the surrounding region, according to Russian authorities.
The drone attack occurred in the early morning hours of election Sunday, according to official statements, as polling stations were closing across Russia. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said via the messaging service Telegram that several drones heading toward Moscow had been intercepted. Governor Andrei Vorobyov also reported shootdowns in the region around the capital.
According to the state news agency Tass, Russia's air defense service activated alert readiness and set up mobile checkpoints. Footage circulating on social networks purportedly showed explosions over Moscow districts. The city administration urged the public to follow the instructions of security forces and to stay away from windows and roofs.
