According to the current UN forecast, the world population will continue to grow for around 50 more years, reaching its peak of approximately 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s.
Demographic Change Varies Greatly by Region
Currently, an estimated 8.3 billion people live on Earth, according to United Nations (UN) estimates. Yet humanity is approaching a turning point. The UN projects a rise to around 10.3 billion people by the mid-2080s, before the global population reaches its peak and then declines slightly.
Demographic change is unfolding in very different ways across regions. In 63 countries and territories – including Japan, Russia, and China – the population is already shrinking, according to UN figures. In some of these states, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Somalia, the population is expected to even double between 2024 and 2054, the experts explain.
