Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, has used an interview in New York to call for sweeping reform of the United Nations, warning that the era of diplomatic consensus has ended and that member states must defend international law more actively.

Reform as a political power game

Speaking to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) in New York, Baerbock, a Green Party politician and former German foreign minister, said the United Nations requires fundamental change. "Die Reform ist mehr als überfällig. Aber keinen Tag auf dieser Welt wird es besser zugehen ohne die Vereinten Nationen," she said. She added: "Es gibt keine Alternative zu den Vereinten Nationen."

Baerbock framed reform as a political battle rather than a technical exercise. For many of the 193 UN member states, some of which are not democracies, she said, every reform step is ultimately a political power poker ("von denen manche gar keine Demokratien sind und Kompromissbildung gar nicht in der DNA verankert ist, ist halt jeder Reformschritt am Ende auch ein politischer Machtpoker").
