UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for international rules and common standards for dealing with artificial intelligence (AI) in Geneva on 06 July 2026, warning against a development he described as vibe-coding.

At an event on the topic of artificial intelligence in Geneva, the UN Secretary-General addressed the international community in unequivocal terms. Artificial intelligence is already fundamentally changing the world, Guterres said according to the available soundbites. The central question is whether this change will be shaped together or whether we allow it to shape humanity.

The UN Secretary-General explicitly warned against leaving the future to so-called vibe-coding. Behind this lies his concern that AI systems could increasingly program themselves, control machines, and thereby make decisions that intervene deeply in societal processes. At the same time, Guterres acknowledged that AI can "perform miracles" when used correctly.
