The United Nations has warned of a resurgence of the global HIV epidemic after international funding for HIV response fell to its lowest level in nearly two decades last year.
Background: The funding gap
As the UN organization UNAIDS announced on Monday at the opening of the International AIDS Conference in Brazil, international funding for HIV response fell by 18 percent to 7.3 billion dollars last year. This represents the lowest level in nearly two decades. The organization warned that without renewed political commitments, the global goal of eliminating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 would be jeopardized.
In the past year alone, an estimated 1.2 million people became newly infected with HIV. Sub-Saharan African countries are particularly affected, accounting for about half of all new infections worldwide. In several of these countries, prevention measures largely came to a halt, as UNAIDS further reported.
