Geneva, July 10, 2026

At least one million women and girls worldwide have lost access to vital humanitarian aid since the beginning of 2025 because donor countries have drastically cut foreign aid.

Record Decline in Development Aid

This is according to a new report by the UN women's organization UN Women, presented on Friday in Geneva. The head of the Humanitarian Aid Division at UN Women, Sofia Calltorp, spoke to the press of "highly alarming" findings. The stated figure of one million affected women and girls is "just the tip of the iceberg," Calltorp said.

The background to this development is an unprecedented collapse in international development spending. According to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), development aid spending fell by nearly a quarter in 2025. This represents the steepest decline ever recorded within a single year.
