Unemployment in Northern Germany Declines in May, but Spring Recovery Remains Sluggish

Markus Biercher, head of the Regional Directorate, said the state’s labor market had benefited from a spring recovery that was somewhat stronger than the previous year. Despite the monthly improvement, structural challenges persist. Around 2,900 fewer people are in employment subject to social security contributions compared to a year ago. However, demand for staff picked up slightly in May, with the number of open vacancies about 100 higher than the same period last year, an increase of 0.5 percent.

Unemployment varied significantly across the state. The lowest rate was recorded in the district of Rostock at 5.9 percent, while the Mecklenburg Lake District had the highest at 9 percent. Among the larger cities, Schwerin posted a rate of 9.8 percent, compared to 7.6 percent in Rostock.

Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein See Declines

In Hamburg, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 points to 8.3 percent in May. The number of jobless people declined by 1,300 from April to 94,531, the local employment agency said.

Schleswig-Holstein also saw a decrease, with the unemployment rate dropping to 5.8 percent. The number of unemployed fell by 2,100 to 94,300. Biercher noted the decline was seasonally typical for May. "In Schleswig-Holstein können wir für den Monat Mai den saisonal typischen Rückgang der Arbeitslosigkeit gegenüber dem Vormonat April melden," he said.

Within Schleswig-Holstein, the district of Plön had the lowest jobless rate at 4.3 percent, while Dithmarschen recorded the highest at 6.4 percent. Among the independent cities, Kiel’s rate was 8.0 percent and Neumünster’s was 8.5 percent.

National Picture and Saxony-Anhalt

Nationwide, unemployment in Germany fell below the three-million mark for the first time this year. In May, 2.95 million people were registered as jobless, 58,000 fewer than in April. The national unemployment rate edged down by 0.1 percentage points to 6.3 percent.

Andrea Nahles, head of the Federal Employment Agency, cautioned that the seasonal improvement was weaker than expected. "Trotz eines Rückgangs der Arbeitslosigkeit ist die Frühjahrsbelebung in diesem Jahr aber nicht wirklich in Fahrt gekommen," she said.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the unemployment rate stood at 8.0 percent in May 2026, a decrease of 0.1 points from April. A total of 88,268 people were registered as unemployed, approximately 300 more than in May 2025. The strongest decline in joblessness was among young people under 25.

Markus Behrens, head of the Regional Directorate for Saxony-Anhalt, said that despite ongoing strained economic conditions, many people were able to exit unemployment in the past month. "Trotz der weiterhin angespannten wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen konnten im vergangenen Monat zahlreiche Menschen ihre Arbeitslosigkeit beenden," he stated.

The outlook for the coming months remains subdued, with fewer job vacancies and an increase in long-term unemployment compared to the previous year. The data was collected up to May 12 and published on May 29, 2026.
